The ITIN community is disproportionately targeted by credit repair scams. I'm Rick Jefferson, and I've seen every scheme — from "new credit identity" fraud to "guaranteed 800 scores" to companies that charge $2,000 upfront and vanish. Here's how to protect yourself.
The Most Common Scams Targeting ITIN Holders
1. The CPN/Credit Privacy Number Scam
This is federal fraud. A company offers to create a "new credit identity" using a CPN (Credit Privacy Number). CPNs are typically stolen SSNs belonging to children, elderly individuals, or deceased persons. Using one is a violation of 18 U.S.C. §1028 (identity fraud) and can result in federal prosecution.
2. The "Guaranteed Score" Scam
No legitimate credit repair company can guarantee a specific score increase. Under CROA §1679b(a)(3), making misleading statements about expected outcomes is illegal. Results depend on your individual credit profile, the nature of the negative items, and the bureaus'/furnishers' responses to disputes.
3. The Upfront Fee Scam
CROA §1679b(a)(1) prohibits credit repair companies from charging fees before services are performed. If a company demands $500-$2,000 before doing any work, that's a CROA violation. Walk away.
4. The "Insider Connection" Scam
No credit repair company has "connections" inside the credit bureaus. Disputes are processed through standard procedures. Anyone claiming insider access is lying.
5. The Language Barrier Exploitation
Some companies deliberately target Spanish-speaking ITIN holders, knowing that language barriers make it harder to read contracts, understand rights, or file complaints. They use aggressive sales tactics, hide cancellation terms, and count on you not knowing your CROA rights.
How to Verify a Legitimate Credit Repair Company
- ✓They provide a written contract BEFORE starting work (CROA requirement)
- ✓They clearly state the 3-business-day cancellation right
- ✓They don’t demand full payment upfront
- ✓They explain realistic timelines and don’t guarantee specific scores
- ✓They use legitimate dispute methods (FCRA-based, not fake identities)
- ✓They have a physical address, real phone number, and verifiable reviews
- ✓They offer bilingual support (for ITIN clients, this is a strong positive signal)
"If a company promises you an 800 credit score, charges two thousand dollars upfront, and cannot explain what FCRA section 611 means — run. That is not a credit repair company. That is a predator."
